Blog Design Mistakes You Should Avoid

By Elusoji Sodeeq   Posted at  1/22/2014 07:10:00 AM   Blogging tips No comments

In the process of trying to make your blog as appealing as possible, you might be tempted to make some interesting design tricks which may actually be bad for your blog and might hurt your blog in the long run. In this post, I will try to keep to keep things as simple as possible
, remember to point out where I missed it using the comment section.

  1. Don't do it yourself:
Ok, this doesn't apply to everyone, this point is only meant for the "less-savvy-tech" guys. If you're not a web developer or you're not good at tweaking things, it is probably the best option that you hire someone who could do it well. Believe me, the few bucks will be worth more than the loss of trying to do it yourself will cost.
  2. Avoid Unreadable Fancy Fonts:
Really, that font might look good to you, but if it's gonna affect readability, then it is only necessary you keep it away. You don't want to send readers away from your content all because of some fanciful font which visitors find difficult to read.
  3. Do not Use Tiny Font:
This is somehow similar to the point above, but it is worth stressing. Not everybody has the time to zoom in on your content to find out what you have written. The truth is, if at first sight, visitors have to stress their eyes to see what your page contains, you can be very sure they are jumping out of your blog immediately.
  4. Avoid Annoying Pop Ups:
Honestly, this can be very frustrating. Having little pop ups everywhere leaves a bad impression of your blog on your readers and most people won't even look back on your blog. Mostly, people have their browsers set to kill pop ups and I guess that's because -apart from the fact that it hampers usability-, it also always(or mostly) seem malicious.
  5. Avoid low contrast between text and background:
Nothing sucks like having to read a text with silver color written on a white background. Maybe that's not really a good example of low contrast colors, but my point here is that, if for any any reason, you want to change the color of your text and/or background, make sure there is a high contrast between the two. for example, white text on a black background or vice versa. (Well, I hope you get my point now?)
  6. Never Blink Text(s):
This is just so 1990. Blinking texts were usually considered as a way of drawing readers' attention to a particular block of text, but I think reverse is the case. For me, blinking text is a turn-off and it should be avoided.
  •  it distracts readers thereby making them not being able to concentrate on other (important) content on the blog.
  •  Not all browsers can display blinked texts correctly. To make it worse, some browsers won't even display the blinked text at all, thereby leaving the space blank.

   7. Do not blend links color with other texts:
They are links, they are meant to be clicked, they are meant to be seen. Let readers be able to differentiate a link from other normal texts.

  8. Never AutoPlay Audios And Videos:
This sucks big time. I so much dislike it and am quite sure it is so for a lot of people. If you're to play any media files on your blog, then let the user be in control, let them play it when they feel like and pause it when they want.

 9.  Do not fill up everywhere with Ads:
In as much as it's not a bad idea to make money with your blog, it is also important you ensure the highest level of user experience. Having everywhere filled up with adverts will not hide your content from readers but also, there will be a lot of "clickaways" on your blog without the visitor even getting to know what's on your site.

So that's it for me. Like I said earlier, this might not be an exhaustive one, so feel free to add your points.
